Dr. Douglas Miller is Research Professor of Landscape Science and Informatics, Emeritus in the Departments of Ecosystem Science and Management and Geography at Penn State. Dr. Miller founded and directed, for nearly 21 years, the Center for Environmental Informatics (CEI) in the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute. CEI develops innovative, web-based tools and applications that allow individuals to make useful and productive decisions in numerous agricultural and environmental management contexts.
Dr. Miller has also been actively involved in applying remote sensing and geospatial technology to interdisciplinary research challenges in the earth and environmental sciences for more than 35 years, with his most recent work focused on the use of small, unmanned autonomous systems (sUAS or “drones”) for mapping and measuring vegetation and land surface characteristics in support of a wide range of resource management and environmental science applications. The Mobile Geospatial Systems Group in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management was founded in 2016 to support these research and extension activities.
Dr. Miller retired from Penn State in June, 2021, but is actively working on a number of new endeavors.
